About LEVS - Why October 9th?

Leif Ericson Day was designated by Act of Congress in a joint resolution approved on September 2, 1964. (Public Law 88-566). This resolution established October 9th. each year as "Leif Ericson Day". According to Ivar Christensen, President of the Leif Ericson Society International, October 9th was selected because October 9th., 1825 was the arrival date of the first Norwegian immigrant ship, the Restauration, which landed in New York from Norway on that date.
